Hi, my name is Robert Gogola and I am new to WNY DNUG and Visual Studio. But...after installing VS 2008, getting a book to get me back into VB (formerly did some VBA in Access) and attending May's presentation at Smart Technologies. Wow, the world has shifted quickly!!!
First, let me say how surprised I was that I understood Kathleen's presentation in C# (who could've known...a VB-guy like me).
Second, I installed SQL Server 2005 Standard on my laptop (along w/VS 2008) last night. I use Vista Home Premium...and discovered that I was locked out from connecting to the DB engine from withing Management Studio. (Mind you, a month ago I didn't have any of this and we would certainly not be having this conversation). Could have used some help here. Anyways, after 20 minutes of checking general network type of stuff (that is me, Network-guy), came across a blog using Google where the guy suggested using SA. Well, I could enter the text commands...but, I mean, how was I to run it when I can't connect?
Anyways, someone on the blog had posted that they tried to run Management Studio as Administrator by right-clicking on the app. That did it, I was in, established myself as Admin.-everything and set up credentials.
I would be interested in having a casual programming meetup with some people. You know, you work on your stuff I work on mine. We hang out and take a look at what each other is doing. A beginners/mentoring-type group. The monthly meetups are expert-level, the book I am using is practically how the world was created in 6 days...but it would be nice to hang out in the mid-level playground as well. Consider this an invitation. Send me a line if you're interested: panterab@my.wgu.edu
